Uber has ventured into water transport in Asia for the first time with the launch of Uber Shikara, a service designed to enhance the tourism experience on Kashmir’s iconic Dal Lake. Tourists can now book rides on traditional Kashmiri shikaras directly through the Uber app, merging modern convenience with cultural heritage.
The service begins with an initial fleet of seven shikaras, operating between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and offering one-hour rides. Tourists can pre-book rides up to 15 days in advance, with each shikara accommodating up to four passengers.
Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating: “This is a humble attempt to blend technology and tradition. We hope this service enhances accessibility while uplifting tourism in Kashmir’s breathtaking landscape.”
Notably, Uber will not charge any commission on the rides, ensuring that 100% of the fare benefits the local shikara operators. This feature aims to provide a sustainable and standardized income for the community.
Wali Mohammad Bhatt, President of the Shikara Owners Association, expressed his optimism about the impact of Uber Shikara: “This initiative has the potential to benefit around 4,000 shikaras operating on Dal Lake. The app-based booking system will standardize pricing, eliminate bargaining, and provide assured income for local operators.”
