The deadline for public consultation on digital data protection has been extended until January 2

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said on Saturday that the deadline for public feedback on the digital personal data protection bill, 2022 (DPDP), has been pushed back to January 2, 2023, from December 17, 2022.

“In response to the requests received from several stakeholders, the Ministry has decided to extend the last date for receipt of comments till January 2, 2023,” the notification read. Personal digital data protection discussions began in 2017 when Justice BN Srikrishna established the Srikrishna Committee to recommend a data protection framework.

The past drafts of the PDP Bill, as well as the one released in 2019, had to be abandoned since they were regarded as antiquated and would harm the startup ecosystem, according to numerous stakeholders.

“The purpose of the draft bill is to provide for the processing of digital personal data in a manner that recognizes both the right of individuals to protect their personal data and the need to process personal data for lawful purposes,” the Ministry website says.

The measure requires organizations or individuals collecting data to provide users with a plain-language notice detailing the personal data they seek and the purpose of processing such data. Companies must also hire a data protection officer or authorize someone to listen to users’ questions about consenting to share their information. The plan would most likely be presented to parliament during the 2023 budget sessions.
