Telecom Minister Vaishnaw Announces India’s Possession of 127 Patents for 6G

India has garnered over 127 international patents for 6G technology, as announced by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Communications, on Wednesday. Vaishnaw emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion regarding India’s trustworthiness and capacity to operate on a large scale has led to a spike in demand for domestically made telecommunications equipment in foreign markets. The minister also stated that the Prime Minister has charged his ministry with spearheading the development of 5G technology and leading the world in the evolution of 6G technology.

Addressing the Communication Ministers’ Conclave, Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that India’s goal to be at the forefront of 5G technology and lead the development of 6G technology has been achieved through the collective efforts of the academic, entrepreneurial, and innovative communities. Vaishnaw also revealed that Indians have secured 127 patents for 6G technology thus far.

During the conference, the Prime Minister unveiled the government’s vision statement for 6G technology. The Department of Telecom’s vision document predicts that 6G technology will provide ultra-low latency and deliver speeds of up to 1 terabit per second, which is 1,000 times faster than the maximum speed of 5G. While 5G technology is expected to offer speeds ranging from 40 to 1,100 Mbps, as per the document. Ashwini Vaishnaw, furthermore, offered to extend the significantly discounted 5G testing services to all neighbouring nations in attendance at the conclave.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Communications, emphasized the need for a different regulatory approach for India’s growing digital economy compared to traditional economies. He mentioned that regulations for the digital economy should be technology-agnostic and dynamic, capable of changing with evolving technologies. Vaishnaw also stated that upcoming bills such as the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill and the new Telecommunications Bill will be principle-based rather than prescriptive.

At the India Telecom exhibition, where around 20 companies with local manufacturing capabilities are showcasing their solutions, Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan inaugurated the event. A total of 30 countries, including the US, Russia, Vietnam, and countries from South Asia, participated in the conclave.
