Tata Group to Commence iPhone Assembly in India Following Wistron Unit Acquisition

Tata Group is poised to initiate the assembly of Apple iPhones in India after securing approval for the acquisition of Wistron Corp’s Indian  manufacturing unit. The sale of this unit to the conglomerate has been authorized, according to Deputy Minister for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

A Tata company will embark on the production of iPhones in India to cater to both domestic and global markets, as confirmed by Rajeev Chandrasekhar via the social media platform X.

The approval for this acquisition entails Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing India Private Limited transferring to Tata Electronics Private Limited for an estimated sum of $125 million. This significant development was communicated through a statement from the Taiwan-based supplier.

Wistron has not immediately responded to requests for comments regarding this transaction.

Apple has been actively positioning India as a vital growth driver for its operations, as the company seeks to diversify production away from China. The tech giant’s journey of iPhone assembly in India commenced with Wistron in 2017 and expanded further through contracts with other manufacturers, including Foxconn and Pegatron Corp.

A noteworthy incident took place in December 2020 when the Wistron plant in Karnataka’s Narasapura was compelled to suspend operations for three months due to worker protests over unpaid wages, resulting in substantial financial losses.
