Swiggy tests one-hour delivery feature with new e-commerce platform Maxx

Food delivery giant Swiggy is testing a new ecommerce feature in its app called Maxx, which offers a promise of delivering orders within an hour. The pilot project is being conducted in select areas of Bengaluru, and customers can place orders in various categories such as electronics, pet care supplies, books, toys, home and kitchen appliances, and stationery items. The company plans to add new categories soon, including beauty and grooming, health and fitness, and essential clothing.

The new feature is aimed at creating a shopping ecosystem, from food and grocery delivery to ecommerce. However, food delivery and Instamart will remain Swiggy’s core businesses. “Maxx aims to be the destination for a wide variety of home and family shopping needs, delivered in one hour. We are currently running a pilot program in Bengaluru. Stay tuned for more updates,” said a Swiggy spokesperson.

According to media reports, the company is preparing for a public listing by September this year. Swiggy’s CTO Dale Vaz recently stepped down from his role, while the Senior Vice President for consumer technology and fintech at the company, Madhusudhan Rao, was elevated to the CTO role. Last month, Co-founder Phani Kishan Addepalli took over as the head of Instamart, after Karthik Gurumurthy announced he would be taking a sabbatical.

Swiggy’s move to expand into ecommerce comes as the Indian market for online shopping continues to grow rapidly. The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the trend towards online shopping, as more people have shifted towards e-commerce for their everyday needs. With its large customer base and established delivery network, Swiggy is well-positioned to take advantage of this trend.

The company’s foray into ecommerce is a step towards providing a one-stop-shop for customers’ everyday needs. “Maxx aims to be the destination for a wide variety of home and family shopping needs, delivered in one hour,” said a Swiggy spokesperson. With plans to expand into new categories such as beauty and grooming, health and fitness, and essential clothing, Swiggy is positioning itself as a major player in the Indian ecommerce market.
