Snapchat Set to Introduce “Dreams,” Expanding Generative AI Features
- ByStartupStory | August 22, 2023
Snapchat is set to introduce a new feature called ‘Dreams,’ allowing users to creatively manipulate their selfies by incorporating AI-generated images into the background. This feature aims to add a touch of fantasy to photos, enabling users to place themselves in imaginative settings and scenarios using AI technology. According to app researcher and developer Steve Moser, users can either capture new selfies or attach existing ones to these fantastical backgrounds.
Users will be able to employ AI to enhance their photos by adding backgrounds, building upon the app’s existing ‘filter’ feature. However, successful utilization of the ‘Dreams’ feature would require clear selfies with unobstructed features, and photos without others in the frame. The app will advise users that using a variety of angles, expressions, and lighting conditions will yield better AI-generated photos.
Snapchat is striving to make this feature more collaborative by working on ‘Dreams with Friends.’ This addition will allow users to grant their friends permission to incorporate them into AI-generated images. The ‘Dreams’ feature will be prominently positioned between the Camera Roll and Stories sections of the app.
While initially focusing on user engagement, Snapchat envisions the potential to monetize this feature in the future through updates and enhancements. The platform has already ventured into generative AI with its AI-powered chatbot, My AI, which enables users to communicate using text and Snaps. The introduction of ‘Dreams’ marks Snapchat’s continued expansion into the realm of generative AI features.
