SEOUL, August 14 (Reuters) – South Korea’s leading telecommunications provider, SK Telecom (017670.KS), has announced a significant investment of $100 million in the U.S. artificial intelligence company Anthropic. This move aims to reinforce SK Telecom’s AI-driven ventures in the field of telecommunications.
Anthropic, a startup that competes directly with OpenAI in the development of AI foundation models, stands as one of the most well-financed AI firms. It recently secured $450 million in funding from notable investors, including Google’s Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) and Spark Capital, in May.
SK Telecom, which had previously made a smaller investment in May, unveiled on Sunday its collaborative plan with Anthropic. The two entities are set to work together to create a global, telecommunications-focused, multilingual large language model, as well as establish an AI platform.
While SK Telecom did not disclose the precise extent of its previous investment in May or its ownership stake in Anthropic, the telecommunications giant continues to deepen its engagement with the AI innovator.
Founded in 2021 by former executives of OpenAI, Anthropic’s Claude models are positioned as significant competitors to OpenAI’s GPT-4.
In a separate development, SK Telecom entered an alliance with Deutsche Telekom, e& (electric and telecommunications), and Singapore Telecommunications in July. This consortium is dedicated to jointly advancing telecommunications-centered AI enterprises.
