India’s leading social media platform Sharechat Took Action On 2.85 Mn Content Pieces In May For Flouting Norms


 

In like, 11,370 user accounts on Sharechat were permanently deleted for persistently violating community rules. In May, eight legal letters were issued by law enforcement organisations to the domestic social networking platform. In seven of these cases, it gave authorities access to data, and in a ninth, a takedown request was handled.

The platform also took action on more than 2.85 million content pieces (28,56,862) in May 2022. Among these were 2.5 Mn pieces of user-generated content (UGC) for violating social customs. Also, 1.26 million comments were removed for violating rules, while 1.5 lakh content pieces were taken down for being explicit. Additionally, 68,410 items were checked for copyright violations, and 681 chat groups were shut down for breaking rules.

Sharechat also placed a “permanent” UGC restriction on 10,699 user accounts and a permanent “edit profile ban” on 10,517 accounts. On 10,573 accounts, a “comment ban” was put in place permanently. The platform prohibits users in three categories: UGC, editing of profiles, and comments. The prohibition might last anywhere from one day to almost a year (permanent ban).

Comparatively, ShareChat received 5.01 million user complaints (50,11,076) in April of this year while permanently terminating 10,930 user accounts. In the meantime, the instant messaging service WhatsApp reported in its most recent compliance report that in April, more than 1.9 million accounts were banned in India. Combined, Facebook and Instagram took action on 21.6 million pieces of content in April of this year.

Between April 26, 2022, and May 25, 2022, Twitter received 1,589 complaints from Indian users, and 1,621 URLs were blocked. In May, Google India got 25,694 complaints, and 62,673 results were removed as a result of those complaints about allegedly breaking community standards. Social media platforms with a large user base are mandated to provide monthly compliance reports under the new IT Rules 2021.
