- ByStartupStory | August 22, 2022
The 15 startups chosen for the seventh batch of Surge, the VC firm’s quick scale-up program, have been announced by Sequoia India and Southeast Asia. Half of the participants were in the pre-launch phase when they were chosen for the 16-week program, which began in early 2019.
They partnered with over half of our Surge 07 firms when they were in the early stages of development. Some of these are second or third-time founders, while others launched their companies immediately out of college. Many of the Surge 07 founders have substantial experience in their respective fields.
The cohort includes Nykaa’s former CFO, Uber’s first engineers in India, software engineers who helped construct Apache Hive, an aerospace engineer transformed fintech founder, and machine learning engineers who worked on Facebook’s conversational AI. Furthermore, one-third of the companies in this cohort is led by a woman. These vibrant women from the region contribute a lot of expertise and knowledge to the Surge community and this cohort.
Surge has taught 281 founders across 127 startups in 16 industries over the last three years. These companies have also raised a total of $1.7 billion in follow-on funding, with more than 60% of companies from the first five cohorts raising series A and higher. Byju co-founder Byju Raveendran, Sequoia Capital managing partner Douglas Leone, Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, & Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath are all past presenters and mentors for the program.
