Sam Altman Expresses Interest in Investing in Indian Startups; Engages in AI Regulation Discussions with PM

Sam Altman, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of OpenAI, emphasized the significance of industry self-regulation while acknowledging that complete reliance on companies for governing artificial technology, considering its immense power, is not advisable. Altman recently had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in India and the necessity for regulatory measures.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, expressed his interest in investing in Indian startups during a fireside chat at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in New Delhi. Altman revealed that he had engaged in discussions with several Indian startups on Wednesday. When questioned about self-regulation, Altman stated that OpenAI is committed to self-regulating and dedicates approximately eight months to ensuring the safety of ChatGPT.

“We worked with an external organisation to figure out what the limit should be. We think that we won’t be (the) only organisation here. We do think coordination is important,” he said.

“Self-regulation is important and is something that we want to offer but I don’t think that the world should not be left entirely in the hands of the companies either, given what we think is the power of this technology.”

People worldwide have transitioned from utilizing ChatGPT primarily for online content search to a wide range of applications such as academia, technology advancement, and software coding. As a result, calls for the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) and the establishment of ethical guidelines have gained traction. Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking cautioned that the emergence of fully developed AI could potentially jeopardize the existence of humanity. Regarding the impact of geopolitics on OpenAI collaborations, Altman acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding how global superpowers would influence technological advancements.
