Bidding for Packages C and D began on the third day of the auction, with the winner for Packages A and B already determined on Monday, making the IPL the world’s second-richest sports league. The BCCI received the highest-ever media rights in the high-profile auction. According to Shah, the event is now the world’s second-most valuable sporting league in terms of pre-match value. The IPL’s per-match value has increased by more than 100 per cent since Tuesday’s auction, to INR 114 crore from INR 54.5 crore previously.
Disney Star (previously known as STAR India) paid INR 16,348 Cr for a five-year contract to broadcast IPL matches in 2017. Sony spent nearly twice as much for the rights in the first ten years of the IPL. The IPL’s high ticket prices are due to the tournament’s huge viewership. The IPL is one of the most popular athletic events in the country, with over 380 million people tuning in halfway through the 2021 edition. In 2022, advertisers paid around INR 17 lakh for a 10-second commercial during the game. Despite the virus spreading devastation across the country, the IPL’s value was estimated to be over $4.7 billion in 2021.
