Ratan Tata, a pioneer in the field, recently disclosed an unknown investment in the business Goodfellows, which provides older people with companionship as a service. Since stepping down as CEO of the salt-to-software Tata Group, the 80-year-old industrialist has been a vocal supporter of startups. Shantanu Naidu launched the most recent investee startup.
The graduate of Cornell University Since 2018, Naidu, 25, has worked as a general manager at Tata’s office. He had previously created a business centred around pets and shared Tata’s passion for dogs and stray cats. The 84-year-old Tata, who is a bachelor and remarked, “You do not know what it is like to be lonely unless you spend time alone looking for company,” appreciated Naidu’s inspiration and also forgave his mentee for the time he spent away from the workplace.
No one worries about becoming older until they really do, according to Tata, who also noted that finding the kind of companionship we take for granted is difficult. The business employs recent graduates with the necessary empathy and emotional intelligence abilities to “work” as the elderly clientele’s companions and make their days easier by helping them with any duties or just by talking to them.
The business has been doing beta testing with 20 seniors in the financial capital for the past six months, and it intends to start providing services in Pune, Chennai, and Bengaluru soon. According to Naidu, the company intends to expand across the nation but would want to do it gradually without sacrificing the calibre of the companions it recruits.
