PM to Chair NITI Aayog Governing Council Meet on July 27

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the 9th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog on July 27, where the key agenda will be discussing the ‘Vikshit Bharat@2047’ vision document. This ambitious document aims to outline strategies for transforming India into a developed nation by 2047, marking the centenary of its independence.

The Governing Council, which is the apex body of NITI Aayog, comprises all state chief ministers, lieutenant governors of Union Territories, and several Union ministers. As Chairman of NITI Aayog, Modi will lead the discussions.

The ‘Vikshit Bharat@2047’ document is being prepared to help India achieve a $30 trillion economy by 2047. It consolidates various sectoral visions into a unified strategy focusing on economic growth, social progress, environmental sustainability, and good governance.

However, the meeting is set against a backdrop of political discord. Chief Ministers from three Congress-ruled states — Siddaramaiah of Karnataka, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh, and Revanth Reddy of Telangana — have announced their boycott of the meeting. Their decision stems from allegations of bias against their states in the Union Budget.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, both from opposition parties, have also declared their intention to boycott the meeting. The Aam Aadmi Party-led governments in Punjab and Delhi have joined the boycott, adding to the political tension surrounding the event.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had initially planned to attend, has canceled her visit to Delhi. It remains uncertain whether she will attend the meeting on Saturday.

In support of the opposition’s stance, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra has criticized the Centre, accusing it of denying states their fair share of funds in the Budget. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MP Mahua Maji has indicated that her party will make a decision based on state interests. The JMM is a part of the INDIA bloc.
