OYO Updates Check-In Policy, Restricts Unmarried Couples from Checking In

OYO, the popular travel booking platform, has introduced a significant update to its check-in policy, starting with its partner hotels in Meerut. The new guidelines, effective immediately, discourage unmarried couples from checking in, requiring valid proof of relationship at the time of check-in, even for bookings made online.
According to the directive, OYO has instructed its partner hotels in Meerut to enforce this policy with immediate effect. Sources familiar with the policy change mentioned that, based on feedback from the ground, the company might expand the policy to other cities in the future.
Speaking about the update, Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India, told PTI,
“OYO is committed to upholding safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also recognise our responsibility to listen to and work with the law enforcement and civil society groups in the micro markets we operate in. We will continue to review this policy and its impact periodically.”
Additionally, the brand has given its partner hotels the discretion to decline bookings from couples based on their judgment, aligning with local social norms and sensibilities.
This move is being seen as part of OYO’s broader strategy to reposition itself as a safer and more family-friendly platform. It also aims to cater to solo travelers and families, addressing concerns raised by law enforcement and societal groups in specific regions.
As the policy rolls out, it remains to be seen how it impacts OYO’s user base, particularly younger couples who often rely on the platform for affordable and convenient stays. The company has assured periodic reviews of the policy to balance customer expectations and local societal norms.
