Over 45% of Serious Gamers in India Claim Earnings of up to Rs 12 Lakh a Year: Report

A recent HP report highlights a significant increase in income for serious gamers in India, with 45% reporting earnings between Rs 6-12 lakh in 2023. This survey, spanning 3,000 gamers across 15 Indian cities, reveals a shift in gaming motivations, emphasizing gaming as a viable avenue for income and recognition, not just leisure.

Vickram Bedi, Senior Director of Personal Systems at HP India, expressed enthusiasm about the expanding esports industry, stating, “It is encouraging to see the esports industry growing and providing diverse career opportunities to gamers. Indian youth has the potential to not only make it big at the global esports arena but also to tap on entrepreneurial opportunities in the industry.”

The survey underscores the diversification of career prospects within gaming, including roles like “influencers” and “esports management,” gaining traction among gamers. Additionally, it dispels the misconception of gaming being solely an urban phenomenon, showcasing a surge in serious gamers in non-metro cities.

Furthermore, the report reveals a diverse demographic engaged in gaming, with a significant presence of serious gamers among GenZ (75%) and Millennials (67%). Notably, 58% of female respondents were identified as serious gamers, reflecting the inclusive nature of the gaming community.

However, the report also identifies gaps in awareness about gaming education in India, with 61% of respondents unaware of such opportunities. Additionally, it highlights gamers’ reliance on platforms like YouTube and peers for skill enhancement, with around 57% seeking gameplay training to improve their abilities.

In a positive shift, parental attitudes towards gaming are evolving, with 42% approving gaming as a hobby and nearly 40% acknowledging a positive change in their perception of gaming due to the industry’s growth.
