OneWeb plans to launch satellite-based broadband services in India despite launch delays

The satellite-based internet provider OneWeb, which is supported by the Bharti Group, has stated that it will deploy its services in India regardless of any launch delays brought on by the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

OneWeb will attempt to launch its remaining low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites from the Sriharikota-based Satish Dhawan Space Centre launch platform. While OneWeb acknowledged that the Ukraine situation had an influence on the company’s launch timeline, it intends to employ Indian launching capabilities in 2022 to serve the Indian market as soon as possible. OneWeb was unable to reach a crucial cosmodrome in Kazakhstan during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In order to launch some of its remaining satellites, OneWeb is said to have made a deal with NewSpace India, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Out of the 648 satellites OneWeb expects to launch for its constellation, 428 have already been launched.

In order to provide satellite broadband in India, the company has previously been granted licences for national long distance (NLD) and global mobile personal communications via satellite (GMPCS).

Additionally, the firm anticipates receiving all necessary regulatory permits from the government soon. In order to put up ground-based satellite gateways in India and offer service to residents of that nation, OneWeb must still get government clearance for satellite landing rights and market access.
