The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), launched in 2021 by the Indian government to democratize ecommerce, has successfully onboarded more than 7 lakh sellers and service providers, according to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. These sellers represent over 600 cities and towns across India, underscoring ONDC’s growing footprint in the digital commerce ecosystem.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Goyal announced the network’s achievements, stating that it has processed over 15 crore transactions and now includes 200 network participants. He highlighted ONDC’s role in empowering businesses, particularly small enterprises, by creating a level playing field on the network.
“ONDC was launched in 2021 by the Modi Government with a vision to democratise ecommerce in India. Over the past three years, it has not only achieved numerous milestones but also empowered businesses, especially small enterprises, by creating a level playing field for them on the network…,” Goyal wrote.
The commerce minister also noted that consumers from 1,100 towns and cities have transacted on the platform since its launch.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to Goyal’s post, lauding ONDC’s transformative impact on the ecommerce landscape. “ONDC has contributed to empowering small businesses and revolutionising ecommerce, thus playing a vital role in furthering growth and prosperity,” the Prime Minister said.
ONDC CEO Thampy Koshy recently revealed that transactions on the network have tripled since December 2023. He projected a 7-8X increase in the number of transactions by December 2025, reflecting the growing acceptance and scalability of the platform.
The network registered 1.4 crore transactions in October 2024, a figure driven by the festive season sales. Of these, 55 lakh transactions were from the mobility segment, while the remaining 84 lakh came from non-mobility segments.
ONDC, incorporated in 2021, operates under the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). It is an open protocol-based network designed to promote local commerce across various segments, including grocery and mobility. The government envisions ONDC as an alternative to existing ecommerce giants, aiming to increase visibility and opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and small traders.
