Microsoft uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 AI model to support cybersecurity experts with Security Copilot

Microsoft unveiled Security Copilot, a new product last week that uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 generative AI model to support security experts. Interest in using more advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models is increasing as cyberattacks become more dangerous. Terence Gomes, Country Head, Security at Microsoft India, was interviewed about the impact generative AI can have on cybersecurity, the complexity of cybersecurity, and how Indian businesses are responding to an increase in cyberattacks. Edited passages:

AI is a common component of contemporary threat intelligence systems. What additional benefits can generative AI offer the cybersecurity sector?

Analytical baselining employs mainstream AI. Nearly all of our security platforms use AI and ML in the background to perform extensive baselining and flag any anomalies. Using AI, we can combine multiple alerts that are all related to the same incident, such as 20 different alerts, into a single incident.

It can accomplish much more when generative AI is used as a co-pilot. With generative AI, you can enter your queries and receive quick results. Consequently, it aids in a more thorough investigation and quicker analysis.

How have security professionals responded to Microsoft’s Security Copilot?

The industry is about to undergo a revolution thanks to generative AI. Although it is not yet widely accessible, there is still a lot of interest in it in India. I’ve been in this industry for the past 25 years, so I can appreciate the frustration that practitioners feel when they have to deal with security alerts and investigations. This makes me pretty excited. It would typically take more than a day or two to examine various signals, manually gather information, and then attempt to make it work.

What is the cause of the lack of cybersecurity talent? Do you anticipate a solution soon, and can generative AI assist?

Generative AI will enhance the human component, which is still necessary. Continued skill shortage is still expected. A report from India claims that cybersecurity will create 1.5 million new jobs.

We are currently analysing 65 trillion signals per day globally, compared to 43 trillion last year and 6 trillion a few years ago. You can only imagine how many cyber signals there are that we looked at to give our clients insights. Additionally, attackers are changing and resurfacing with fresher threats and strategies.

What part has regulation played in strengthening India’s security posture?

When it comes to regulation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has assisted banks in strengthening their security posture by providing pro-active guidance. Even the CERT-IN guidelines for larger organisations have raised a lot of awareness, helped with management effort, and helped with prioritisation, all of which aid security practitioners in putting controls in place.

Numerous organisations that I’ve spoken to are working hard. By following all these recommendations, their posture has improved when compared over time.
