Microsoft-backed OpenAI launches high-powered GPT- 4 AI

On Tuesday, the startup OpenAI announced the commencement of the release of GPT-4, a potent artificial intelligence model. This move signals the possibility of increased proliferation of human-like technology and heightened competition between its supporter Microsoft Corp and Google, owned by Alphabet Inc.

OpenAI, the team behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, announced the development of a new “multimodal” technology capable of generating content based on both text and images. According to a blog post, the text-input feature will be accessible to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and software developers who register for the waitlist, while the image-input feature is currently in a preview phase for research purposes.

The much-awaited release highlights the potential for office workers to increasingly rely on continuously improving AI for a wider range of tasks. It also underscores the competitive landscape among technology companies vying to secure business opportunities arising from these advancements.

Google, owned by Alphabet Inc., recently unveiled a “magic wand” for its collaboration software capable of drafting almost any type of document, just ahead of Microsoft’s anticipated presentation of AI for its Word processor, which is expected to be powered by OpenAI. Furthermore, a Microsoft representative disclosed that GPT-4 is contributing to the functionality of the company’s Bing search engine.

OpenAI reported that its latest technology represents a significant upgrade over a previous version called GPT-3.5. For instance, in a simulated bar exam, which is mandatory for graduates of law schools in the US before they can start practising professionally, the new model scored in the top 10% of test takers, while the previous model scored in the bottom 10%, according to OpenAI.

Although the two versions may seem alike in everyday discussions, OpenAI explained that “the divergence becomes evident when the task’s complexity surpasses a certain threshold.” OpenAI further stated that “GPT-4 is more reliable, imaginative, and capable of processing much more intricate commands.”

During an online demonstration, Greg Brockman, President of OpenAI, exhibited the technology’s ability to convert a hand-drawn prototype of a basic website into an actual website by analysing a photograph. The demonstration further revealed that GPT-4 can aid individuals in computing their taxes.

According to the company, GPT-4 has an 82% lower likelihood of generating responses containing disallowed content compared to its predecessor and outperforms it by 40% in specific factuality tests. “Hallucinations,” which refer to erroneous responses that have plagued many AI programs, have been a significant challenge, the company added.

According to Rishi Jaluria, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, Microsoft is expected to gain significant benefits from the implementation of GPT-4.

The company not only incorporates OpenAI’s latest technology into its products, but its Azure cloud also supports the usage of OpenAI, especially at a time when companies are cautious about IT expenditures due to an unpredictable economy.

Jaluria added that “as businesses utilise GPT-4, their workloads would be processed via Microsoft Azure, making this a crucial period for the company”.
