Meta announces Vikas Purohit as head of global business in India


Vikas Purohit was appointed Director of Global Business Group in India by Facebook parent company Meta on January 9. Purohit will oversee the direction and execution of the vertical’s strategy for the biggest advertisers and agency partners in the country. 

Just a few months prior, in November, Ajit Mohan was replaced as the head of Meta’s India operations by Sandhya Devanathan. Ajit Mohan left Meta to oversee rival Snap’s Asia Pacific business. 

Purohit will oversee the company’s strategic partnerships with the top brands and advertising agencies in India to help it grow its revenue across important domestic channels. He will also work with the media and creative ecosystems to help the biggest advertisers and agencies in the nation quickly adopt digital tools.

According to the company, he will report to Arun Srinivas, Director and Head of Ads Business for Meta in India.

Srinivas said, “I am thrilled to welcome Vikas as he joins our team to shape the role that Meta platforms can play in enabling businesses, supporting India’s economic growth, and building the digital advertising ecosystem of the country.”

Purohit previously served as the CEO of Tata CLiQ, the e-commerce arm of the Tata Group. After working there for six years, he left in October of last year. Purohit has more than 20 years of experience in senior business, sales, and marketing positions at businesses like Tommy Hilfiger, Aditya Birla Group, Reliance Brands Limited, and Amazon. 

Purohit, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, began his professional journey at the Aditya Birla Group before moving on to Tommy Hilfiger and eventually taking the reins of retail at Reliance Brands Limited. He was instrumental in creating and overseeing Amazon Fashion while there.

The India division of Meta reported a net profit of Rs 297 crore for the fiscal year 2021–2022—an increase of 132% over the profit of Rs 128.2 crore in the prior fiscal year. Total revenue increased by 56.5 percent to Rs 2,324 crore for the fiscal year, up from Rs 1,485.1 crore the year prior. During the time, gross advertising income increased by 74% year over year to Rs 16,189 crore.
