Meta acquires Luxexcel, a smart eyewear startup in the Netherlands

Meta has acquired Luxexcel, a Dutch smart eyewear company. The tech firm confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch, saying, “the Luxexcel team has joined Meta, deepening the two companies’ existing partnership.”

The two companies are rumored to be collaborating on Meta’s Project Aria, which is a prototype device that can be “worn like regular glasses” and will be used to develop software and hardware for future Augmented Reality (AR) devices.

Luxexcel made its name with 3D-printed prescription glasses, but it has recently expanded its efforts to create lenses for smart glasses that can be printed with integrated technology such as LCD displays and holographic film.

As per reports, with the addition of Luxexcel, Meta will be able to leverage its experience in developing prescription glasses for AR eye wear. This isn’t Meta’s first attempt to break into the AR smart wear market. It launched Ray Ban brandes smart eyeglasses called Stories in 2021 in collaboration with Essilor Luxottica. Through these glasses and with the help of a companion app, users could listen to music, take photos, make calls, and record short videos to share on Facebook.
