MAARG portal operationalized to help Indian startups get mentorship from experts

Startups in India can now register on the MAARG portal launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a part of the Startup India Action Plan in 2016 to support startups in the country. The portal will enable startups to receive mentoring from experts.

The Department for Promotion of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, launched the MAARG portal, which stands for mentorship, advisory, assistance, resilience, and growth, as a one-stop platform to enable mentorship for startups across assorted sectors, stages, functions, geographies, and backgrounds.

Startups in India can now connect with academicians, industry experts, successful founders, seasoned investors, and other experts from across the globe, through the MAARG portal via artificial intelligence (AI)-based matchmaking, to get tailored guidance on growth and strategy.

The MAARG portal has three main objectives – to offer sector-focused guidance, handholding, and support to startups throughout their lifecycle; to create a formal and organized platform that makes intelligent matchmaking between the mentors and their respective mentees easy: and to enable effective and professional mentorship for startups. The government aims to build a result-oriented mechanism for the timely tracking of mentor-mentee engagements.

The DPIIT is operationalizing the MAARG portal in three phases:

Phase 1:

The DPIIT has successfully launched the first phase by onboarding over 400 expert mentors across sectors.

Phase 2:

From November 14, 2022, the DPIIT has started the onboarding of startups on the MAARG portal.

Phase 3:

The third phase involves matching the mentors to the startups. Interested startups can apply at https://maarg.startupindia.gov.in for mentorship from experts from all over the world.

A statement released by the Union Commerce and Industry Ministry this week read, “Innovations are the inevitable engines of growth for a nation, and India alone is home to more than 82,000+ DPIIT-recognized startups and over 107 Unicorns. Entrepreneurship is the foundation of our great nation’s economic wealth and prosperity, and we are quickly transforming from a nation of job seekers to a nation of job creators.”  The release further stated that Startup India is currently focused on catalyzing the startup culture and building a strong and inclusive ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship in India. Currently, the Indian startup ecosystem is ranked 3rd largest globally.
