Lenovo to Manufacture High-End AI Servers in India and Launch New R&D Lab

Global technology leader Lenovo is set to revolutionize the high-performance AI server market by commencing manufacturing operations in India. The company has announced that it will begin producing enterprise AI servers at its Puducherry facility, which has been operational since 2005. This move aligns with Lenovo’s commitment to advancing AI infrastructure solutions and underscores its strategic focus on expanding its presence in the Indian market.

Lenovo’s Puducherry plant, known for its robust manufacturing capabilities, will produce high-end servers featuring the company’s innovative 8-way GPU architecture. The facility, with a production capacity of around 50,000 enterprise AI rack servers and 2,400 high-end GPU units annually, will see more than 60% of its output earmarked for export across the Asia-Pacific region.

“This development marks a significant step toward achieving both Lenovo’s and the Indian government’s ‘AI for All’ vision,” said Amar Babu, President – Asia Pacific, Lenovo. The Puducherry plant will manufacture five key offerings from Lenovo’s portfolio, including three rack-mounted enterprise AI servers and two flagship 8-way GPU servers. Lenovo anticipates that these next-gen technologies will drive substantial growth for its India business in the upcoming year.

In addition to the manufacturing announcement, Lenovo has unveiled a new Infrastructure R&D Lab in Bengaluru. This lab will join Lenovo’s existing network of 18 R&D labs worldwide, which include server design and development centres in Morrisville, Beijing, and Taipei. The Bengaluru lab is one of only four labs globally dedicated to infrastructure solutions and will focus on the system design, development, and testing of next-generation server platforms.

Shailendra Katyal, Managing Director of Lenovo India, highlighted the significance of this development: “With today’s announcement of AI server manufacturing in India, we complete Lenovo’s pocket-to-cloud technologies ‘Made in India’ for the world. The Infrastructure R&D Lab’s focus on designing and developing next-generation mainstream servers further underscores Lenovo’s dedication to ‘R&D in India for the world.”

The Bengaluru R&D facility will be equipped with cutting-edge tools for electrical, design/testing, power characterization, thermal analysis, and compliance testing, ensuring that innovations undergo rigorous testing before global deployment.

Lenovo has been actively involved in manufacturing in India since 2005, producing a diverse range of devices from PCs to mobile devices. During the fiscal year 2023-2024, the company produced over seven million devices in India.
