India Unveils Draft Policy to Boost Deep Tech Startups

The Indian government has unveiled the draft National Deep Tech Startup Policy (NDTSP) aimed at creating a favorable environment for the development and growth of deep tech startups. These startups involve early-stage technologies based on scientific or engineering advancements that have not yet been commercially applied. The policy outlines a nine-point program to foster the sector’s growth, enhance India’s capabilities, and boost global competitiveness.

The draft policy, released by the office of the principal scientific advisor to the government, invites public comments until September 15. It proposes essential changes in nine key areas, including supporting research, development, and innovation; strengthening the intellectual property regime; facilitating access to funding; promoting shared infrastructure and resource sharing; establishing conducive regulations, standards, and certifications; attracting skilled human resources and promoting capacity building; encouraging procurement and adoption; ensuring coordination among policies and programs; and sustaining deep tech startups.

The NDTSP is designed to complement and add value to the existing Startup India policies, programs, and initiatives. It aims to create an ecosystem that empowers deep tech startups to overcome their unique and complex challenges.

The policy’s formulation involved contributions from over 200 stakeholders within and beyond the deep tech startup ecosystem, with the National Consortium and Working Group, established by the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC), playing a key role.
