Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, has unveiled a bold initiative aimed at reaching an additional 50,000 government school students across seven states by 2026. The initiative seeks to popularize science education and offer career guidance in vernacular languages.
According to IIT Madras, the initiative is provided free of cost to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields. The institute has already distributed over 3.20 lakh books to 9,193 rural and government schools in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Professor V Srinivas Chakravarthy, from the Department of Biotechnology at IIT Madras, is leading the initiative. In a statement, IIT-M highlighted Professor Chakravarthy’s contribution, stating, “Professor Srinivasa Chakravarthy has also written/translated about 70 popular science books into Telugu mainly targeting high school children.”
As part of the initiative, school students undergo a free career guidance assessment called ‘My Choice My Future’ (MCMF). This tool, developed by faculty and alumni of IIT Madras in collaboration with BodhBridge, aims to assist students in making informed career decisions.
“The MCMF tool is a simple career guidance assessment that provides detailed insights,” IIT-M explained. “This online career guidance solution helps school students identify the right career paths based on their strengths.”
