IBM Study Shows Chief Data Officers as Key Players in Organizations


As data becomes increasingly essential to modern business operations, the Chief Data Officer (CDO) is becoming a critical member of the C-suite. According to a new study by the IBM Institute for Business Value, CDOs are facing significant pressure to produce results, with varying expectations for their role and remit. The study also revealed that the average tenure of CDOs is the lowest among all boardroom roles, lasting only 4.5 years on average.

As companies prioritize technology adoption for increased business value and growth, there is a growing need to implement effective security measures for enhanced protection. According to a survey of Indian CDOs, 76% considered security to be the most important feature of their data architecture, with cloud readiness following closely behind. The survey also found that 57% of Indian CDOs believed ensuring data security was the most significant responsibility of their role, but only 56% felt that their organization’s data was adequately secure and protected. Given these pressures, CDOs are seeking ways to not only create value but also safeguard it.

The survey also revealed that a majority of CDOs, including 67%, are leveraging AI and machine learning to unlock value from data, while 64% are implementing automation and 66% are showing a preference towards hybrid cloud technology. Tata Communications has launched Jamvee, a cloud-based application that includes an integrated voice-calling feature to enhance employee collaboration and productivity. The company stated that Jamvee is tailored to meet the needs of knowledge and frontline workers in enterprises. Users can make calls and chat with colleagues in a closed user group (CUG) using the platform’s interface, which also offers voice recording capabilities. Additionally, Jamvee can be integrated with enterprise communication apps.

In addition, Jamvee enables quick onboarding and complies with regulations through the use of fraud prevention APIs and detection and alerting functions to ensure conversation security. It also helps businesses reduce cost overflows associated with deploying large-scale applications that require extensive user training and technical infrastructure.
