Hyundai Motor Group to Invest $7 Million in Battery and Electrification Research with IITs

Hyundai Motor Group has announced a significant collaboration with three Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to advance research in batteries and electrification, with an investment of $7 million over the next five years. The partnership involves IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras, and will focus on innovations aimed at meeting the unique requirements of the Indian market.

As part of the collaboration, Hyundai will establish a Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE) within IIT Delhi. This center will be sponsored by Hyundai Motor Group and will serve as a hub for conducting cutting-edge research in battery technology and electrification. The primary goal of the CoE is to lead advancements that will contribute to the growth of sustainable mobility solutions in India.

Naksup Sung, Head of Research and Development (R&D) Planning & Coordination Center at Hyundai Motor Group, shared the vision behind the initiative: “We believe that Hyundai CoE will cultivate a strong network of talented individuals from India’s academic landscape, driving innovation and future growth.”

The Hyundai CoE will also facilitate academic-industrial cooperation, fostering exchanges between experts in the fields of battery technology and electrification from both Korea and India. This initiative is expected to promote further collaboration and accelerate the development of technologies that can contribute to Hyundai’s broader goals in the Indian market.

Hyundai’s investment in India aligns with its strategy to deepen its presence in the country, not just in the automotive sector, but across various industries including mobility, steel, construction, logistics, finance, IT, and services. This collaboration with IITs marks a significant step toward creating a sustainable ecosystem for future mobility in India.

Hyundai Motor Group’s ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability is further reflected in its expanding partnerships with Indian institutions, paving the way for future advancements in electric vehicles and battery technologies.

The partnership is expected to generate significant breakthroughs in battery research and electrification, supporting Hyundai’s goal of contributing to India’s green transition while advancing technological expertise in the region.
