Hemesh Singh, Co-founder of Unacademy, Steps Down; Transitions to Advisory Role

Hemesh Singh, co-founder of Unacademy, has announced his resignation from his position as Chief Technology Officer. Singh will transition into an advisory role after nearly a decade of contributing to the company’s success. Unacademy, founded in 2015 by Gaurav Munjal, Hemesh Singh, and Roman Saini, has become a significant player in the edtech industry, offering a variety of courses to connect educators and learners for skill improvement.

In a heartfelt post on X, Singh shared his thoughts on the transition: “After almost a decade of building Unacademy with @gauravmunjal and @romansaini, I have decided to move from an Executive Role to an Advisory Role. It has been a wonderful ride and I am extremely grateful to have been a part of this journey. We did change the Test Prep Industry for good. What a crazy journey it has been! Thanks a lot @gauravmunjal for everything.”

Unacademy has experienced a series of top-level changes recently. Chief Operating Officer Vivek Sinha and Chief Financial Officer Subramanian Ramachandran are among the notable departures. However, the company has been proactive in filling these vacancies, with the recent appointment of Pratik Dalal as the CFO of its offline business.

Despite these changes, Unacademy continues to grow. The company’s operating revenue increased from ₹719 crore in FY22 to ₹907 crore in FY23, highlighting its strong performance in the competitive edtech sector.

SoftBank-backed Unacademy has also adjusted its internal goals to provide additional voting rights to Munjal and Singh through bonus shares issued in 2022. These rights will be accessible if the company forms a committee by March 2025 to work on its initial public offering, according to reports.
