Government Summons Netflix Content Head Over ‘IC-814 — The Kandahar Hijack’ Series Controversy

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned the content head of Netflix India in response to growing controversy over its latest series, IC-814 — The Kandahar Hijack. The series, which dramatizes the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC-814 from Kathmandu to Delhi in 1999, has sparked a heated debate over its portrayal of the hijackers.

Official sources confirm that the Ministry has requested an explanation from Netflix regarding the depiction of the hijackers, which some viewers have criticized for its allegedly ‘humane’ portrayal of the perpetrators. This portrayal has led to a backlash from various quarters, raising concerns about the series’ accuracy and its potential implications.

BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya has voiced strong objections to the series’ depiction. He stated, “The hijackers of IC-814 were dreaded terrorists, who acquired aliases to hide their Muslim identities.” Malviya further criticized filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, saying, “Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, legitimised their criminal intent, by furthering their non-Muslim names.” He warned, “Decades later, people will think Hindus hijacked IC-814,” and accused the series of advancing a leftist agenda to “whitewash the crimes of Pakistani terrorists, all Muslims.”

Malviya added, “This will not just weaken / put in question India’s security apparatus in the long run, but also shift the blame away from the religious cohort, that is responsible for all the bloodshed.”

On the other side of the debate, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the outrage over the series. He remarked, “It was really amusing to see the people who took movies like ‘Kashmir Files’ as the gospel truth having a melt down at the way the events of IC814 are depicted in the Netflix show.” Abdullah further questioned, “Now suddenly they want accuracy and nuance packaged in the script.”
