Google Partners with Tamil Nadu for Pixel 8 Manufacturing and AI Skill Development

Internet giant Google has announced a new collaboration with the Government of Tamil Nadu, focusing on the manufacturing of its Pixel 8 range of phones, skill development, and fostering an industrial ecosystem for AI solutions. The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier today at Google’s Mountain View office.

The MoU was signed in the presence of senior Google officials, including Google Cloud Vice-President and Head of Platform Amit Zavery, and Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M K Stalin. The agreement aims to bolster Tamil Nadu’s AI ecosystem and industrial capabilities.

Under the MoU, Google will work closely with Guidance, the state-backed nodal agency for promoting investments, to develop a robust AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu. This collaboration will focus on providing access to advanced technologies and resources, with an emphasis on empowering individuals, businesses, and government entities to harness AI for inclusive growth.

The MoU also includes plans to explore the manufacturing of Pixel 8 phones in Tamil Nadu. Google stated, “The Made in India Pixel 8 devices manufacturing is underway, happening in Tamil Nadu through local partnerships.”

Additionally, the agreement will facilitate the upskilling of Tamil Nadu’s workforce with AI capabilities through Google’s collaboration with the state’s ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ scheme. Industries Minister TRB Rajaa expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are happy to collaborate with Google on advanced manufacturing, including the recently announced Made in India Pixel 8 phone being manufactured in Tamil Nadu. The MoU signed today will explore key AI initiatives under the Tamil Nadu AI labs.”

The collaboration will also extend to the startup ecosystem in Tamil Nadu, with Google providing mentorship and networking opportunities with Google experts and industry leaders. Zavery highlighted the significance of the partnership, saying, “We are thrilled to partner with the Tamil Nadu government on their journey towards an AI-powered future. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to fostering inclusive growth and technological progress through AI.”

He added, “We look forward to building a thriving AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu – one that not only drives innovation and creates opportunities but also empowers individuals with skills they need to succeed in the digital age.”

The partnership will also facilitate the use of Google Cloud’s AI technologies to enhance decision-making, automate processes, and promote innovation through technology adoption.
