Google is implementing workforce reductions, impacting hundreds of employees across various teams, as the tech giant continues its cost-cutting efforts this year. Notably, the voice-based assistant and hardware teams are set to undergo reductions, with the augmented reality team facing the majority of the impact.
A Google spokesperson provided insight, stating, “Throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities.”
The spokesperson further mentioned that some teams are continuing to make organizational changes, including role eliminations globally. The specific number of jobs affected remains unclear.
Fitbit Co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman, along with other key leaders, are reportedly leaving the organization. Google had acquired Fitbit for $2.1 billion in November 2019.
The Alphabet Workers Union, representing certain employees, expressed concerns, stating, “Tonight, Google began another round of needless layoffs. We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe!”
In September, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reportedly reduced its global recruiting team by hundreds of employees. Additionally, last January, Alphabet trimmed its workforce by approximately 12,000 employees, constituting around 6% of its global workforce.
