Gogoro, based in Taiwan, to test 6-second battery changing stations in India

Gogoro, a Taiwan-based business that specializes in electric vehicles, intends to test its 6-second battery changing facilities there. After Singapore and Indonesia, this will be the third pilot for the business. In Delhi-NCR in November, the business intends to launch its India test programme, which will include electric two-wheelers and exchange stations.

Gogoro is traveling to India to collaborate with a variety of parties, according to Kaushik Burman, general manager of Gogoro India. According to Gogoro, about 125 million battery swaps occur each year at its 2,400 battery switching stations around Taiwan, for a total of 350 million swaps.

The size of the Indian market and the government’s promotion of EVs through a number of policies, in Kaushik’s opinion, are driving the decision to expand there and providing foreign businesses “great confidence.” “

By creating policies that will encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, the government is doing appropriately. The market is large, of course,” he remarked. Invest India reported that as of August 2022, there were 13.92 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) on Indian roads, according to information from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

This number will probably rise by 45 million to 50 million EVs by 2030. Additionally, it stated that the Indian automotive industry is predicted to be worth $222 billion and that the country’s EV market will be worth $2 billion by 2023 and $7.09 billion by 2025. According to a report released in August 2022 by Invest India and Nomura Research, there are 1,800 chargers nationwide.

If several requirements are satisfied, including the implementation of government mandates and subsidies, policy frameworks that ensure interoperability and safety, and battery swapping roadmaps for various segments, from two- and three-wheelers to e-commercial fleets, swapping stations could contribute to 30 to 40% of the growth of the EV market in India. Kaushik asserts that Gogoro will concentrate on decarbonizing the logistics industry. “We’ll do whatever it takes to produce goods that are inexpensive in India and later for the rest of the world. For us, India is a center of global manufacturing.”

All of Gogoro’s products, including its cars, batteries, and battery switching stations, would be included in the company’s ‘Make in India’ ambitions, according to Kaushik. It intends to create an ecosystem and collaborate with a nearby supplier. The company has tested two swap stations and 20 automobiles in Singapore, while it has 400 vehicles and 7 switch stations in Indonesia.

The Nasdaq-listed company’s main goal is to break into the logistics and business-to-business markets, where it would introduce its own solutions. In the retail sector, Gogoro would collaborate with Hero Motocorp, a strategic partner. The businesses would work together to establish battery switching stations and release electric two-wheelers for the retail market that would use Gogoro batteries. According to news reports, the vehicles will go on sale by the end of this year.

Globally, Gogoro collaborates with numerous OEMs. Gogoro has ten partners who utilize its battery swapping network, including Yamaha and Suzuki. Additionally, it collaborates with the iPhone manufacturer Foxconn to produce batteries all around the world. Investors in Gogoro include Hero Motocorp and Hon Hai (Foxconn) Technology Group.
