- ByStartupStory | July 21, 2022
BlueStacks, a popular Android emulator platform, lay off 60 Indian staff earlier this week. On Monday (July 18), employees from several departments were notified via a video call that their services were no longer a requirement. According to the sources, the startup claimed internal reorganization as the cause for the layoffs. According to those familiar with the situation, the total number of layoffs across many regions might be as high as 120 – 150 employees. BlueStacks has offices in Tokyo, Seoul, and Beijing, in addition to Delhi.
According to insiders, the business is paying laid-off staff a one-month pay as severance money, which also covers medical benefits. Hue Harguindeguy, CHRO of BlueStacks, confirmed the layoffs in a statement, saying, “We had increased in size from 300 to 600 individuals during the previous two years.” We had to realign due to changes in the macroeconomy. We are currently assisting impacted staff in finding new jobs and positions.” The corporation has also announced the layoff of 60 Indian employees.
BlueStacks, developed in 2011 by Rosen Sharma, Jay Vaishnav, and Suman Saraf, has grown in popularity as the need for Android smartphones has increased. Until enough Android games were available, the startup’s downloads skyrocketed. BlueStacks enables Android users to run Android software on Windows and Mac computers. The startup’s service was unrivaled at the time, and consumers received firsthand experience playing Android games & utilizing apps on larger laptop and desktop screens. Recently, the firm has expanded into cloud gaming. BlueStacks had 40 million active monthly users and over 180 million downloads every year till last year, for a total of 1 billion downloads to date.

Furthermore, the release of Windows 11 had a significant influence on BlueStacks’ user base. Microsoft revealed that Windows 11 will facilitate the download and use of any Android app natively. This meant that users would no longer need to utilize emulator platforms like BlueStacks to construct a virtual operating system to operate Android apps on their laptops/desktops. Users of Windows 11 may download and use the Android app directly. BlueStacks is the latest business to lay off workers due to the economic slump. If we focus especially on Indian employees, 11,353 people have been affected by layoffs in three hundred firms.
