Edtech unicorn Byju’s, among others under govt scanner for misselling courses

Regarding the suspected misselling of courses, the Department of Consumer Affairs is said to have taken significant note of some edtech companies in India. BYJU’S and its group firms were one of the businesses mentioned in the ET report.

On June 24, 2022, the India Edtech Consortium (IEC) and executives from several edtech firms met. The consumer affairs ministry then noted that complaints from customers had been made against these businesses, with Bengaluru-based BYJU’S and its group divisions receiving the majority of these complaints as a result of the startup’s extensive student base.

A number of IEC member businesses, including upGrad, BYJU’S, Unacademy, Vedantu, Great Learning, and WhiteHat Jr., were present at the conference in New Delhi where officials reviewed a wide range of issues connected to unethical business practices and false advertising by edtech organisations.

In order to resolve the accusations, BYJU’s Divya Gokulnath and other senior executives shared a thorough action plan with the authorities. Gokulnath is a member of the India Edtech Council, and the meeting is being described as proactive.

It has also been suggested that the business, which is also the most valuable startup in India, collaborate with the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) about the claims it makes in the advertisements.
