DPIIT to Establish 12 New Industrial Cities to Boost Domestic Manufacturing

the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has announced the establishment of 12 new industrial cities across various states in India. This initiative aims to replicate the success of industrial cities like Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh and Dholera in Gujarat.

Out of the 12 new cities, two will be developed in Andhra Pradesh and one in Bihar, according to DPIIT Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. He further revealed that eight industrial cities are already in different stages of implementation, with trunk infrastructure completed in four cities—Dholera, Auric (Maharashtra), Vikram Udyogpuri (Madhya Pradesh), and Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). Land plot allotments for industrial use are currently underway in these locations.

For the remaining four cities, the government’s special purpose vehicle (SPV) is in the process of constructing basic infrastructure, including road connectivity, water, and power supply.

“These are industrial smart cities. These 12 new cities will make the count to 20. We built the trunk infrastructure and then gave the plots. We take environmental clearance for the entire city, so the company gets the ‘plug and play’ kind of things,” Singh told PTI. He added that the department will approach the Union cabinet for the approval of these new cities. “The plans are ready and the land is with the state governments. We just have to approve the equity to the SPV.”

This strategic move is expected to increase the share of manufacturing in the country’s GDP and generate significant employment opportunities. Commenting on the announcement, Ashoo Gupta, Partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co, said, “This innovative reform, in collaboration with states and the private sector, can significantly boost industrial growth and city planning. These projects will become dynamic economic centres that drive development and innovation, creating a lasting impact. Usually, the government constructs essential infrastructure and provides land to industries, attracting investments by offering high-quality, dependable, eco-friendly, and robust infrastructure.”
