Delhi Acid Attack: Notices to Flipkart, Amazon from DCW for Selling the Acid

The Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) on Thursday issued notices to online shopping platforms Flipkart and Amazon for selling the toxic chemical on their sites. . The issue of notice is done a day after a Delhi-based schoolgirl was attacked with acid by her former lover.
The crime happened on wednesday where two men towards a student on the way to school with her younger sister at Mohan Garden near Uttam Nagar. The girl is suffering with the 8 per cent facial burn injuries, and is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital’s burn ICU. Three people, including the prime accused, Sachin Arora, have been arrested. The criminals have revealed that they brought the acid online from Flipkart and DCW has asked both the e-shopping platforms to give an explanation and complete details of sellers who are selling ‘acid’ as a product via their platforms.

DCW said that the availability of such toxic chemicals on online shopping platforms is illegal, and is a matter of grave concern. “The Commission has learned that the accused person had bought acid through the online shopping portal ‘Flipkart’. The Commission has also learned that acid is easily available on leading online shopping platforms such as ‘Amazon’ and ‘Flipkart’ which is illegal,” DCW chief Swati Maliwal said in the notice.“Considering the gravity of the matter, please provide the sought information to the Commission latest by December 20,” the notice said.
TheCentre banned over-the-counter sales of acid to the public to prevent acid attacks in 2013. Those with a licence can only buy the substance. The number of acid attacks in India in 2021 totaled was 176.DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal called the easy availability of acid on ecommerce platforms a ‘grave concern’.
“We strongly condemn this unfortunate incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family,”“We are extending all support to the concerned authorities in their investigation,” the Walmart-owned ecommerce platform added. Said by flipkart on the issue and they have blacklisted the seller from the platform.
