Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram Lander Nears Moon’s Surface for Imminent Soft Landing
- ByStartupStory | August 23, 2023
As India’s ambitious lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3 approaches its conclusion after more than a month since its launch, the focus is now on the imminent landing of the Vikram Lander on the moon’s surface. The expected time for the landing is around 6:04 pm today. Following the landing, the Pragyan rover will be released.
Currently, the Vikram Lander is positioned approximately 25 km away from the nearest point on the moon and 134 km from the farthest point.
Experts emphasize that the final 15 to 20 minutes of the mission will be of paramount importance, as the Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram Lander attempts a soft landing. People across India and around the world are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the Chandrayaan-3 Landing today.
Given the history of India’s previous lunar mission, which faced failure in the final moments before landing, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) is taking extra precautions this time to ensure a successful landing. The critical phase leading up to the moon landing, often referred to as the “20 or 17 minutes of terror,” poses significant risks to the spacecraft. During this period, the entire process becomes autonomous, requiring the Vikram lander to ignite its engines at precise times and altitudes.
In a recent update, ISRO provided details about the procedure for the last twenty minutes. The Indian space agency plans to initiate the Automatic Landing Sequence (ALS) once the Vikram Lander reaches its designated location after 5:44 pm.
