The national government has given the green light for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) to proceed with the Rs 26,281 crore contract with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), paving the way for the company to introduce 4G services in India. Soon, TCS will receive purchase orders from BSNL worth Rs 10,000 crore. By doing this, the government-owned telco will try to roll out its 4G services by December 2022 or January 2023.

Tejas Network, a subsidiary of Tata Sons, will manufacture the equipment on-site for BSNL. TCS claimed in October that it would supply the equipment required within a year of receiving the order. Upon receiving the order, the radio equipment would be supplied within 24 months.
After the launch of 4G services, BSNL reportedly plans to launch 5G services by August 2023. The telco aims to reduce customer problems with both 4G and 5G services.
TCS would like to build 100,000 towers for the BSNL-MTNL network with their Rs 26,281 crore offer. Lakshadweep islands, 4G saturation zones, and locations impacted by left-wing extremism would all receive an additional 25,000 towers. The government received offers from HFCL, L&T, and Tech Mahindra over the two years of negotiations. The news comes after the government provided the telco with a Rs 1.64 trillion bailout package to cover the 4G rollout, operating funding, and capital expenditures. With the debut of BSNL’s 4G, India will join the ranks of countries such as the United States, Sweden, South Korea, and China in the development of telecom network technology.
