BPCL and Tata Motors Join Forces to Establish Nationwide EV Charging Network

Fortune 500 energy giant Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM), a trailblazer in India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution, have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly establish public charging stations nationwide.

Leveraging BPCL’s extensive network of fuel stations and TPEM’s insights from over 115,000 Tata EVs on Indian roads, the collaboration aims to strategically position chargers at locations frequently visited by Tata EV owners. Additionally, BPCL will analyze charger usage data to enhance the overall customer experience.

This collaborative effort seeks to elevate the EV ownership experience across India. In a bid to streamline payments and further incentivize EV adoption, both companies are exploring the introduction of a convenient payment system via a co-branded RFID card. BPCL, with over 21,000 fuel stations nationwide, is dedicated to a sustainable future, aligning strategy, investments, and environmental goals. The company plans to install 7,000 EV charging stations by the next year.

In addressing range concerns for EV owners, BPCL has initiated the development of more than 90 Electric Vehicle Fast Charging Highway Corridors across the nation. These corridors, covering over 30,000 km along major highways, ensure a fast-charging station approximately every 100 kilometers on both sides.

Santosh Kumar, Executive Director In charge Retail at BPCL, emphasized the company’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040. Kumar stated, “EV is a field of collaboration, and we believe that joining hands with TPEM shall take the EV game of BPCL and TPEM to the next level.”

TPEM, commanding a substantial market share of over 71% in electric passenger vehicles, boasts more than 115,000 Tata EVs on Indian roads. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., highlighted the critical role of charging infrastructure in accelerating EV adoption. Chandra stated, “This collaborative partnership epitomizes our shared vision of fostering positive change – an enabling infrastructure for the growing EV customer base.”

The collaboration between BPCL and TPEM is poised to contribute significantly to the growth of charging infrastructure in India, aligning with global case studies that underscore the pivotal role of widespread and convenient charging networks in driving exponential EV adoption. The strategic partnership is expected to play a key role in mainstreaming EV adoption in India.
