Blinkit Workers Stage Strike Against New Pay Structure Leading to Service Disruptions

On Wednesday, Blinkit services faced disruptions in Delhi-NCR as delivery partners of the popular grocery delivery application went on strike to protest against the new pay structure that reduced delivery rates for executives. The workers staged protests in Gurugram, Faridabad, and other parts of Delhi-NCR, and approached the Gurugram District Commissioner for support. As a result, the Haryana Labour Department has issued a notice to Blinkit after workers sought intervention from officials on Wednesday.

According to Nitin, a worker from Blinkit, the company’s new pay structure has reduced delivery rates significantly. Previously, he used to receive ₹50 per delivery for a distance of three kilometers, but now the payment has decreased to ₹7 to ₹18 per delivery. Nitin further explained that each order can weigh up to 20 kilograms, and if the delivery is not made to the doorstep, workers risk termination. As a result, the workers have decided to protest by going on strike, as they feel unsupported and dissatisfied with the changes in their pay structure.

The matter has been escalated to the Labour Commissioner, and a meeting has been scheduled for Thursday. A notice has also been sent to Blinkit in response to the ongoing protests by the workers, who have received support from the All India Gig Workers’ Union. Union leader Rikta Krishnaswamy stated that the company’s policies are unlawful and in violation of the Shops and Establishments Act, and the workers will continue their protests in response to these grievances.

According to Rikta Krishnaswamy, the All India Gig Workers’ Union, Blinkit has unilaterally reduced the per delivery rates for their riders from ₹32 to ₹15 and eliminated the incentive system without consulting the workers. This decision by the company will significantly affect the earnings of the workers, who are already struggling with long working hours of up to 12-14 hours per day and low wages. The union will continue to support the workers in their demand for fair pay and reasonable working hours in compliance with the law, and will escalate the issue to the Labour offices in Gurugram and Delhi.
