Bhavish Aggarwal Labels MapMyIndia’s Legal Notice as “Opportunistic”

Ola Electric founder Bhavish Aggarwal has addressed the controversies surrounding the company’s newly launched mapping solution, Ola Maps, and the legal notice received from MapMyIndia.
“It is opportunistic of MapMyIndia; there are opportunistic players everywhere. We will respond to them at the right time,” Aggarwal stated in an interview with MoneyControl.
Ola Electric, based in Bengaluru, recently introduced Ola Maps as a direct competitor to Google Maps and subsequently shifted its operations to this in-house mapping service.
The parent company of MapMyIndia, CE Info Systems, has accused Ola Electric of copying its data, alleging a breach of the license agreement. In 2022, Ola Electric had partnered with MapMyIndia to provide navigation services for its S1 Pro electric scooter.
MapMyIndia’s legal notice claims that Ola violated the agreement by co-mingling the licensed product with another competing product and engaging in reverse engineering to extract or copy the source code from MapMyIndia’s API. The company alleges that Ola Maps cached and saved MapMyIndia’s data, which constitutes a breach of the licensing agreement signed in 2021.
The Delhi-based firm has threatened both civil and criminal legal action against Ola Electric.
Ola Electric has refuted these allegations, calling them false and malicious.
“We would like to state unequivocally that these allegations are false, malicious and misleading. Ola Electric stands by the integrity of its business practices. We will suitably respond to the notice shortly,” an Ola Electric spokesperson said.
In other developments, Ola Electric is set to make its stock market debut on August 2. Speaking about the upcoming IPO, Aggarwal mentioned, “We wanted to ensure that the pricing was set at a level that would generate significant excitement among investors.”
Recent media reports suggested that Ola might be reconsidering its plans for car production. However, Aggarwal clarified the situation, stating that the firm has not confirmed or denied any plans to pause car production.
