Apple Gears Up to Challenge ChatGPT with Its Own ‘Apple GPT’
- ByStartupStory | July 21, 2023
Tech giant, Apple, is making significant strides in the world of generative AI with its latest development. Bloomberg News reported that the company is internally building large language models, fueled by its proprietary chatbot service codenamed “Apple GPT,” as competition in the AI landscape intensifies.
The company has been discreetly constructing its own internal infrastructure, known as “Ajax,” which will serve as the foundation for building robust language models. The move is seen as a response to the growing popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Meta’s Llama in the AI chatbot domain. Although access to Apple’s chatbot is currently limited to its internal teams, industry insiders speculate that a significant AI announcement could be on the horizon as early as next year.
This strategic development marks a pivotal step for Apple, which has been steadily incorporating AI technology into its products, including the renowned voice assistant Siri. The company’s cautious approach to publicizing its AI endeavors is well-known, yet it is evident that AI plays a pivotal role across its product ecosystem.
Apple’s commitment to AI is further highlighted by its decision to restrict internal usage of ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot, an AI code-writing assistant owned by Microsoft. In 2020, the tech giant acquired two AI startups, shedding light on its long-term plans to integrate AI into core products and applications.
During a recent earnings call, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook emphasized the company’s plans to integrate AI seamlessly into its offerings, while acknowledging the need for responsible AI development.
Meanwhile, in the dynamic AI landscape, Qualcomm, a leading mobile chipmaker, announced its collaboration with Meta to enable the deployment of Meta’s large language model, Llama 2, on Qualcomm chips for mobile devices and PCs, beginning in 2024.
As Apple forges ahead with its “Ajax” framework and Apple GPT chatbot, the tech world eagerly awaits the next breakthrough in generative AI, promising exciting advancements and innovations in the future.
