Apple opens first retail store in India after 25 years, with Mumbai store launch

Apple has launched its first retail store in India in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex business district. The move comes 25 years after the tech giant first began selling products and services in India through partners. The store’s opening was marked by Apple CEO Tim Cook, who posed for photographs with excited customers, wearing a black t-shirt and grey pants alongside the company’s senior vice president for retail, Deirdre O’Brien. Customers were already queuing at the mall before the store’s 11am opening. The Mumbai store will be followed by another outlet in New Delhi’s Saket later this week. “We are thrilled to open our first store in India in one of Mumbai’s most vibrant neighbourhoods,” said O’Brien. “We know our customers in India are passionate about Apple and we are excited to bring them the service, quality and convenience that our customers around the world love.”
The new retail stores come amid Apple’s push to increase its footprint in India, where it has previously been hindered by high import duties and regulations around local manufacturing. “Apple’s retail strategy is to reach customers where they are and that is why you see us taking some very bold moves in India,” said Cook. “I couldn’t be more excited to get started with Mumbai and then rolling out more stores across the country.” Apple has also invested in its supply chain in India and has begun manufacturing the iPhone SE locally. The company is said to be considering moving significant production out of China in the future.
