Amazon India made a unique move by unveiling its first floating store on Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir, as part of its “I Have Space” last-mile delivery program. The program utilizes local resources to ensure deliveries within a 2 to 4 kilometers radius, thereby addressing the final step in the supply chain. The floating store, operated by Murtaza Khan Kashi, owner of the houseboat Selec Town, will deliver packages daily to other houseboats on the lake, expanding Amazon’s delivery network and providing additional income opportunities for small businesses like Kashi’s. Kashi sees this partnership as a way to supplement his seasonal income from the houseboat.
Since its launch in June, the floating store has become a reliable delivery source for customers around Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake. Karuna Shankar Pande, Director of Amazon Logistics in India, expressed excitement about this venture, He asserted, “This initiative will facilitate dependable, swift, and efficient deliveries to customers around Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake,” while also emphasizing the advantages it extends to small enterprises and Amazon’s distribution network in Srinagar.
The ‘I Have Space’ program has grown significantly since its launch in 2015, partnering with around 28,000 neighborhood and Kirana (small grocery) stores in approximately 420 towns and cities across India. By integrating local stores and small businesses into the digital economy, the program enhances Amazon’s delivery capabilities.
Simultaneously, Amazon India announced its annual Great Indian Freedom Festival sale from August 5 to August 9, offering substantial discounts across various product categories. Amazon Prime members will also enjoy exclusive 12-hour early access, showcasing Amazon’s commitment to its loyal customer base.
Amazon’s introduction of a floating store in Srinagar demonstrates the company’s innovative approach and commitment to contributing to the local economy. This move has the potential to revolutionize delivery systems in regions like Srinagar and beyond, setting a new precedent for e-commerce operations in India.
