Airtel Payments Bank Introduces Face Match to Bolster Account Security


Airtel Payments Bank has unveiled a new feature, Face Match, aimed at enhancing the security of customer accounts. This cutting-edge technology leverages advanced machine learning algorithms to assess a threat score for each user based on a combination of factors including user behavior, transaction patterns, location, historical data, and signals from devices and mobile apps.

When a user’s threat score exceeds the predefined threshold, Face Match is triggered to safeguard the account. The user receives an immediate notification on their registered mobile number, informing them that Face Match has been activated. This notification includes a link directing the user to the Face Match section of the Airtel Thanks app, where they must complete a verification process. The user is required to take a selfie, which is then compared with the original photo from their onboarding process through sophisticated facial recognition and liveliness checks.

A successful match allows the user to continue with their transactions, while an unsuccessful match prompts them to visit a nearby banking point for biometric verification. This approach ensures that only the legitimate account holder can perform transactions, thereby enhancing account security and user control.

As digital banking continues to evolve, customers face increasing risks from fraudsters who exploit security gaps for crimes such as conduit account frauds, account takeovers, and money laundering. Face Match is designed to address these challenges effectively and at scale.
