Niti Aaoyog’s CEO admits Bengal registered positive GPD growth in the pandemic year.

Chief Minister Mamta Banarjee and the finance minister, Amit Mitra’s claim that demand-led financial packages in Bengal have had a good impact on the state’s economy was supported by the Niti Aayog’s CEO, Amitabh Kant on Tuesday.

Bengal became only the second state in the Rupee 10 lac crore club states to witness a positive GPD growth despite the pandemic and its ill effects on the economy.

Renowned economist, Abhirup Sarkar, said that Bengal had a good environment for economic transactions. He felt that the economy which is largely dependent upon the MSMEs had done fairly well when compared nationally where a negative yearly growth was registered.

Amit Mitra had also earlier pointed out that steps taken by the state like lending money to small MSMEs through banks had helped West Bengal’s economy between April 2020 and January 2021. He says that around 63000 crore rupees were lent and the result was ‘continued employment of around 23 lakh people in the state’.
