A new variant of Dengue has been found in 11 states of the country which has now become a matter of concern for health workers all over the country. Though the Dengue outbreak is in control, there have been cases of high fever in patients caused by the new variant of Dengue DENV 2.
Among the multiple variants — DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4 of the dengue virus, DENV 2 or the strain D2 is considered to be the most severe and can even lead to fatal internal bleeding and shock.
According to ICMR’s Dr. Balram Bhargava, this new strain was also one of the reasons behind the mysterious fever which had western UP and led to many deaths as the strain is very virulent and capable of inducing mortalities and hence should be dealt with caution.
Dr. B.L. Sherwal, the Director of RGSS Hospital, told IANS that irrespective of the strain of Dengue, the precautions remain the same since the same mosquito spreads it. Water stagnation and wearing a long-sleeved dress are the two most important precautions, he said. This mosquito bites during the day, which is why we should be careful and be aware of its presence. Dr. Sherwal commented that these types of dengue are essentially the same in terms of symptoms, as well as prevention.
