Researchers at the University of Kent derive a universal equation for the shape of an egg.

The shape of a bird egg has been a matter of curiosity for many individuals, it just happens to be an amalgam of a sphere, ellipsoid, ovoid, and conical or pear-shaped. The egg shape not only allows the bird to nurture it in the embryo, but also is feasible to push it out. The most fascinating aspect would be the fact that the egg does not roll out too far away from the nest, and is capable of nurturing a life within it despite its fragility. The scientists call the shape of the egg the “perfect shape” too. This led the researchers to find a befitting equation.
The newly derived universal mathematical formula for egg shape is based on the length of the egg, maximum breadth, the shift of the vertical axis, and the diameter at one-quarter of the egg length. The derivation of the formula of the egg is vital in understanding not only the egg shape itself but also how and why it evolved, thus making widespread biological and technological applications in fields like food research, mechanical engineering, agriculture, biosciences, architecture, and aeronautics.
