8 in 10 Indian professionals choose to return to office: Report
- ByStartupStory | March 24, 2023
According to a report published on Thursday, 78% of Indian professionals now choose to work from the office instead of feeling obligated to do so, as more companies adopt a hybrid work culture.
Additionally, the report states that workers have become more receptive to working from the office, with 86% of respondents reporting a positive shift in their perception compared to a year ago.
The report also highlights the trend of “desk-bombing,” where workers enjoy impromptu conversations with their colleagues at their desk.
A majority of Indian respondents, about 62%, consider desk-bombing a favourable way to engage in impromptu conversations at work.
Furthermore, 60% of GenZ workers in India have already experienced desk-bombing and find it beneficial.
According to LinkedIn’s Managing Editor for India, Nirajita Banerjee, “although Indian professionals appreciate the flexibility of working from home, returning to the office has numerous benefits. It helps to enhance employee morale, foster collaboration and teamwork, and uncover new opportunities”.

The rise of hybrid work has sparked concerns about whether reduced time in the office and lower visibility may negatively impact one’s career.
Although research indicates that a majority of Indians (63%) do not believe remote work has harmful effects on their careers, a similar proportion worry that reduced office presence may hinder their career growth.
This concern may explain why 71% of respondents feel the need to overcompensate when working from home to demonstrate their commitment to work.
In addition, workers are restructuring their work week, with Thursday becoming the new Friday as it is preferred over the least popular day, Friday, for going into the office.
However, 72% of Indian workers surveyed express missing the opportunity to bond with colleagues over a chai break in the workplace, where they could chat about both their professional and personal lives and enjoy a good laugh.
