Mobile Premier League, MPL Is Set To Start US Innings

Online gaming platform Mobile Premier League (MPL) is entering the US market, in a bid to capture the world’s largest mobile gaming market. The Sequoia India-backed startup seeks to stand out in the US market by becoming a ‘super app’—a unified gaming platform with multiple offerings. It has opened an office in New York to oversee operations in the region, where it has a team of five people.

“The massive influx of users that we have in India enables us to build formats that might not have developed in the US because it doesn’t have the same level of user base. That’s the advantage that we have, and this is the reason why we are carrying this advantage forward,” Sai Srinivas, co-founder and chief executive officer of MPL.

The three-year-old startup was earlier this year valued at $945 million after it raised $95 million in a Series D funding round. It has over 75 million users in India. MPL’s revenue has jumped significantly compared to last year, a momentum it seeks to carry onto the next, Srinivas said. He added that the platform is “very well capitalised” and is not raising any more funds in the near future. MPL will launch in the US on iOS and Android with games like baseball and solitaire. It will roll out new games and formats, such as synchronous gaming, in the market throughout the year. Fellow Indian online gaming startup, Games24x7, backed by Tiger Global, is also eyeing the US market for expansion, it said in April. “There is no other equivalent platform of similar value proposition, currently operating in the US. The market for competitive gaming or esports is already validated there.”
